Every day we connect with people. Every day, activities like going to the grocery store, riding the bus, or walking in our neighborhood creates a connection with others. Is this a true connection?
I think it is. When I see people during the course of my day, I make it a point to smile and purposefully look them in the eyes. I make it a point to connect with others in as meaningful a way as I can, even if it’s only for a few seconds.
How Writers and Self-Publishers Connect
Another way I know to purposefully connect with others is through writing.
Written communication is powerful. In as little as 500 pages you can tell an entire life story or create an adventure in a far-off land. You can give tips on “how to” just about anything or share your personal secrets to success. Whatever your story, writing it down creates an energy around it that is more powerful than we realize.
It is powerful because writing and the written word connects us, it is a bridge that leads us to each other. Especially given the events that have unfolded this year.
Think about it for a moment. Our version of connection has changed dramatically. We have gone from being a social society to living in quarantine and depending on the Internet, relying on Zoom, Skype, and YouTube to connect to each other. And while these sources have been a Godsend, they are nothing compared to the written word.
Writing carries the energy of your thoughts, your personal perspectives, and your unique take on whatever your topic is. Writing allows you to articulate your experience in a way that nothing or no one else can. Sharing your personal experiences or discussing your field of expertise creates relatability between you and a potential reader because you have purposefully shared your perspective.
Writing creates connections. Writing allows you to communicate with those halfway across the world without having to buy a plane ticket.
So, if you have a story to tell, a trade to teach, or an adventure to share, write it down. There are lots of people waiting to engage in purposeful connection with you.
